China's Deployment of Deep-Water Oil Rig HYSY981 (May 2014)

Letter Dated 7 May 2014 from the Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations Addressed to the Secretary – General

On 2 May 2014, China National Offshore Oil Corporation moved its deep-water oil rig Haiyang Shiyou 981 to southern area of Triton Island, the southernmost of the Paracel archipelago. The oil rig also sat on Vietnam’s claimed extended continental shelf and on the Vietnamese side of any median line that might be negotiated between the two shelves from the Chinese and Vietnamese coasts.

The following is a letter dated 7 May 2014 from the Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary – General, stating Vietnam’s position on China’s deployment of the oil rig HYSY 981.
